What School Papers Should Parents Keep?

Keeping everything makes important records harder to find. The goal is a small record you can explain and retrieve.

Keep records with lasting value

Retain final report cards, formal learning plans, evaluations, major disciplinary notices, health accommodation records, and documents you may need for enrollment, services, taxes, or disputes. Requirements vary, so check local rules before discarding legal or special-education records.

Discard routine duplicates

Most lunch menus, weekly flyers, old reminders, completed worksheets, and duplicated portal printouts can go once their action or calendar purpose is complete. Avoid storing sensitive student information in unsecured recycling.

Limit memories on purpose

Give each child one bounded memory box or annual portfolio. Choose work that shows growth, personality, or a meaningful moment. A physical limit makes selection possible and keeps the collection usable.

  1. Date the piece.
  2. Add one sentence about why it matters.
  3. Photograph bulky projects.
  4. Review the collection at the end of each school year.
